In this double-blind, crossover study, normal, healthy subjects (women aged 25 - 50) were tested using the Sternberg Memory Scanning Test (a test of short term memory). This test involves showing subjects a one to three digit number on a computer screen. Shortly thereafter a long string of digits is shown. Subjects then decide whether any of the first digits appeared in the second string of digits. The time that the subjects take to remember is then assessed. Women receiving a placebo required an average of 700 milliseconds to remember when the first set of digits contained three digits. Vinpocetine-receiving subjects had an average of 450 milliseconds.
